a sunday in sacrament with brooklyn

you insist on sitting alone on the bench. next to me. i ask you to be reverent and fold your arms for mommy.

you fold your arms.

you take a good look around the room. you ask me, is this the temple? i say no, this is the chapel. you say no jesus lives here too. and i think to myself. i am not going to argue. because if he walks these halls, you would know.

as soon as you hear the keys of the organ, you help yourself to the hymn book. i help you open it to the right page. and you begin singing notes. you sound so angelic to me even though you don't know any of the words. immediately, there are tears in my eyes.

when we are finished singing you ask me if this is also a coloring book, i tell you no. you gently close the book and put it away. it falls sideways as you are attempting to put it in the holder upright. you say, "i'm sorry book." because that is how you are. immediately, there are tears in my eyes.

again, you fold your arms.

as the sacrament bread is passed, you look around the room. all of the sudden, i see your face light up. then your eyes widen. and a smile creeps across your face. you say, "mom, there's baylor!" he winks at you, waves and passes you the bread. immediately there are tears in my eyes. you take two pieces of bread and i let you.

and then you fold your arms.

as the sacrament water is passed, you look around the room. again i see your face light up. your eyes sparkle. your dimples appear. you squeal, "mom, it's baylor!" he again winks, waves and passes you the water. immediately, there are tears in my eyes. you slurp every last drop of water. taking more time than you should and i let you. and you carefully place your cup in the little square.

and finally once more you fold your arms.

there are speakers. you surprise me by asking questions about what the speaker is talking about. i have to remind myself that you are 3 1/2. i answer your questions, but not before there are tears. i am so overcome by emotion that i whisper in your ear that i have a book in my bag and invite you to sit on my lap so i can hold you close.

you go on to sunday school and sunbeams. and you came home with an i am reverent sticker.

that afternoon over lunch i asked you what you learned in church today, . . . this was your reply . . ."mommy, Jesus promised to send us the Holy Ghost when He left the earth."

my child, i should be teaching you, yet you are the one teaching me. i immediately folded my arms and bowed my head . . . and immediately there were tears.

i wish my 3 year old would fold his arms. no he gets out buzz & woody and makes loud noises with them. he takes about 7 pieces of bread & i let him. he spills the water everywhere, then wants more. i wish he would ask questions.. he just throws fits & i take him out.
