being brave

my mom pierced my ears when i was 6 weeks old.  i have always loved having earrings.  i don't know a girl who doesn't want them.  when i had girls, brady and i agreed that we would pierce their ears when they asked for them to be pierced.

out of the blue, brooklyn finally asked.  everyone told her it would hurt, but she said she was ready.  so, off we went.  there was a line out the door.  as we stood in it, brooklyn became more and more scared.  i kept asking her if she changed her mind, but she insisted that we stay.

as we neared the front of the line, the girl piercing ears told brooklyn that she could hold a special bear. i let her choose the earrings she wanted and then it was our turn.

they offered to do both her ears at once, but brooklyn said no.  she wanted them done one at a time.  the girl looked at me and asked if i agreed.  i told her if she wants them done one at a time, we will do them one at a time.

it hurt.  for a moment.  she cried before, during and after, but she did it.

and i was so proud.

dear brooklyn,

today you reminded me that sometimes having courage means doing things even when we are really scared.  this is how we become stronger.  that is what being brave is all about.  and today, you were so very brave.  thank you for being my daughter and reminding me of the things i need to know.

love,

mom

You found your first girl without earrings...I don't have mine pierced.

I loved your thoughts at the end. Sometimes we get so lost in the complexities and stress of being an adult that we forget to look at the simple lessons that only children can teach us.
